Rental checklists for inspections will cover an array of different items. Note that not all of them will be relevant for your particular situation. For example, if you'll be moving into a flat, but your inspection checklist mentions a garden or a backyard, you should mark this item as not applicable.

Avoid leaving anything blank if possible. Always mark something on the form, even if it's simply "not applicable". In addition, if the form allows you to make comments, make sure that you do. Ticking a box that says that the carpet is in fair condition is a first step, but if you can make note of the scorch mark on the carpet in the bedroom, or the hole in the carpet in the lounge room, make sure you do. This can help ensure that you won't receive the blame for these blemishes when you move out.

It's a good idea to fill in the inspection checklist before you move in to your new place. This way you can take the time to go over every inch of the property without having to move furniture out of the way. Furniture can disguise blemishes and hide problems from sight. An empty apartment or house, however, makes it much easier to make a proper assessment of the condition of the property. Make sure to take your time when filling out the rental checklist, as you want to ensure that you've done a thorough job in describing the condition of the property as accurately as possible.
